Engineering is defined by Webster Dictionary as “the art or science of making practical application of the knowledge of pure sciences, as physics or chemistry, as in the construction of engines, bridges, buildings, mines, ships and chemical plants”. I like to simplify by saying “engineers solve problems using math and science”. Civil engineers create, improve and protect the environment as well as plan, design and oversee construction and maintenance of infrastructure, such as roads, railways, airports, bridges, dams, power plants, and water and sewerage systems. SAMSOG (The Surveying and Mapping Society of Georgia) traces its beginning to1947, when the Georgia Institute of Technology sponsored the Georgia civil engineers’ seminar. At that time the civil engineers invited the surveyors to the seminar as their guests. Over the years the organization has worked with the legislature to pass numerous bills and in doing so has advanced the surveying profession. SAMSOG’s educational participation and contributions have been many. About twenty years ago SAMSOG developed a surveyor’s handbook.
